About the show: Sharing the classes and gallery space of Alexandria’s Art League, these five women admired each other’s creative accomplishments and wanted to collaborate on a group exhibit. The result is an eclectic collection of artwork that explores the use of color. The show will run July 11 through September 11, 2010 at the Atrium Gallery of the Takoma Park Community Center in Takoma Park, MD. Come meet the artists personally on August 27, 6-8 PM at a reception in the Atrium Gallery.

About the artists: As newcomers to the greater DC metro art scene, these artists have captured the attention of juries at the Art League Gallery, Lorton Workhouse and the Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts. “Play of Color” gives the public a first in-depth glimpse of their collections, right at the cutting edge of their maturing exploration.

Below is a short statement from each artist (alphabetical) about her work.

Juliet Arnaudo, similarly stretching and traversing the boundary of reality, employs strong juxtapositions of color and content in three-dimensional assemblages toward wonder both psychic and cerebral.

Jennifer Brewer’s "Dance of Life" series features tropical flora and fauna that leap from the canvas with graphic, sharp-edged applications of bright color. She has a degree in Fine Arts and English and a certificate in Graphic Arts, and has been devoting herself full-time to her art for over two years. www.jennifersartgallery.com

Julie Hart balances muted, soft tones and bright colors to establish space, atmosphere and mood in her floral still lifes - the effect is one of uncommon joy. www.juliehartdesigns.com

Through a tilted application of fauvism, Soline Krug emphasizes painterly qualities and strong colors over the representational or realistic, and transforms a wine cellar into mysterious abstract forms that evoke intoxication. www.galeriekrug.com

Charla Wilkerson’s whimsical observation of life around her can be simultaneously hilarious and unsettling. She evokes introspection with her play on scale and composition and use of flat areas of vibrant color. www.freewebs.com/consideringlilies
