What is a glicée print?
A giclée print is a fine art print created using a high-end inkjet printer. The prints reproduced are extremely detailed and accurate to the original artwork. If the piece is life size, brush strokes in the piece are visible.

There are five elements to a quality giclée print:

1) A good scan of the original
A scan of the original piece is done using 2000-watt lights and takes about 1/2 hour for the camera to scan the piece. The lights are carefully placed to avoid glare and pick up highlights and shadows, while the slow scanning allows for accurate detail retention. This produces a 300-dpi piece which can be reproduced life-size or smaller.

2) Archival pigment-based inks
Lucia pigment-based inks are among the most archival available, and are guaranteed for 95+ years. They are water-resistant and lightfast. All canvas and paper are varnished with Glamour II Giclée Veneer, which produce a semi-gloss appearance, enhance brightness and contrast, and help to make the piece more water-resistant. It also helps to protect the piece from pollutants in the environment and oils from the skin.

3) Heavy archival paper or quality archival linen canvas
The paper or canvas used can determine whether the piece looks lackluster or close to the original. I choose my paper based on the piece. For pieces with bright, saturated color, I use the certified archival Hahnemuhle German Etching paper. This is a heavyweight paper at 310 grams per square inch, and produces excellent brightness and contrast. It is certified for 90-100 years. This means that, under lights, the print is guaranteed to maintain accurate color for 95+ years.

4) Printer with color-matching
The Canon imagePROGRAF ipf9000 (http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=180&modelid=14009) is a professional printer that has a 12-color ink set which produces a wide color gamut and deep, dark blacks. The blacks are produced by automatic switching between regular black and matte black inks. The dual print head system has 30,720 nozzles, more nozzles per color than any other printer in the industry as of May 2006.

5) An experienced and exacting printmaking staff
I work with a reliable printing company that has been in business for over 10 years, and specializes in giclée fine art prints. They still maintain the printers that were used 10 years ago, despite the added cost of parts, so that artists that have been producing editions with them can maintain consistency over time.

The combination of these elements produces an archival-quality fine art print. For more longevity reports and technical information, please visit the Wilhelm web site at www.wilhelm-research.com.

Extending the Life of Your Print
UV-protective and anti-reflective glass can help to protect your fine art paper print by blocking up to 98% of UV light from the surface. Some good high-end options include Museum Glass (99% UV protection) and Conservation Clear (98% UV protection) from Tru Vue (http://www.tru-vue.com/). Normal glass provides about 45% UV protection and has a slight greenish cast. Technologies have improved for acrylic, and there are now anti-reflective, UV-protective, scratch-resistant acrylics. Good acrylic options include Acrylite (98% UV protection) from Cryo Industries and Plexiglas UF (99% UV protection) from Altuglas (http://www.plexiglas.com/markets/framing).
